Aromachology: The science of scent
Have you ever walked by someone and caught a whiff of their perfume or cologne, only to be instantly mesmerized by their allure or transported to a different place and time? Well, there's actually a science behind this phenomenon. It's called aromachology.
Aromachology is the study of the psychological and emotional effects of different aromas and fragrances on human behavior and emotions. It is a relatively new field of study that combines the science of aromatherapy and the art of perfumery to understand how different scents can impact mood, memory, and behaviour. Aromachology is used in various applications such as psychotherapy, spa and wellness as well as environmental design to create experiences induced by scent.
How does scent affect our memories?
Scent can have a powerful effect on our memory as it has a direct connection to the limbic system; the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions and memories.
When we smell something, the olfactory receptors in our nose send signals to the olfactory bulb, which then sends information to parts of the brain such as the hippocampus and amygdala, which are responsible for forming and storing memories.
Research has shown that certain scents can trigger specific memories and emotions, such as the smell of freshly baked cookies reminding us of our childhood or the smell of a certain perfume reminding us of a past relationship. This is known as the Proustian phenomenon, named after the French author Marcel Proust who wrote about the power of scent in triggering memories in his novel, "In Search of Lost Time."
Additionally, studies have found that people who have a good sense of smell tend to have better memories than those who have a poor sense of smell. This suggests that the sense of smell plays a crucial role in the formation and recall of memories. This is often why we use essential oils and Bach Flower remedies in clinic as certain smells have the power to transport you back to a moment or memory in time that needs to be relived in order to release suppressed trauma or stuck emotions. How handy!
So the next time you have a moment, why not stop to smell the roses? You might actually remember to bring the milk home! 😏
